Con Dao island: striking natural beauty

Con Dao island has won renown as a must-see in Vietnam thanks to the beauty  of beaches and forests, indigenous culture, specialties and generous islanders. The peaceful and primitive atmosphere on the island can inspire both local and international tourists.

Con Dao Island, which was chosen as a travel destination by the famous Hollywood cuple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in late 2011 is located in the country’s southern sea and 120 nautical miles (around 222 kilometers) from HCMC. Con Dao includes 16 bigs and small islands covering 76 square kilometers, of which Con Son is the biggest with total area of 51 square kilometers. As of the end of 2010, Con Dao was home to 6,000 residents.

On the map, Con Dao looks like a bear reaching toward the East Sea. The island is endowed with long beautiful beaches, clear blue water and shady tropical almond trees. It is also home to a big national park with primeval forests and rich flora and fauna systems. A diving tour allows tourists to watch various colorful fishes swim around roal reefs. A forest trek enables them to watch varous kinds of orchids, black or red squirrels and rare birds. Con Dao is also a preserve for endangered creatures such as dugongs, dolphins and chelonians.

Exploring Ong Dung and So Ray primeval forests, fishing on Bong Lan Islet, snorkeling and scuba diving on Tre Islaet and watching tortoires lay eggs at night on Bay Canh Islet are some of highlights tourist should experience once visiting Con Dao Island. Large and peaceful Dat Doc is another special and romantic beach on the island. You can rest on the beach and see the sun set in the love valley.

Con Dao was once a notorious prison that held revolutionaries who fought for national independence and freedom during the war. It now becomes a historical destination for tourist with Con Dao Museum, model cells, Ma Thien Lanh Bridge and Hang Duong Cemetery.
